Overview of today’s show -
Welcome to the first ever Chasing Unicorns Podcast… On today’s show we’ll talk about ‘the why’ behind the both the podcast and the name ‘Chasing Unicorns.’ We’ll also whack a pinata, share some Holy Moments and take a “Deep Dive with Dave.”
Segment 1 - Chasing Unicorns - why & what?
Saying “Yes” - we’ve been talking about doing a podcast together for the last year.
LGHtv (the organization we fun) but we always felt the need to ‘sensor’ ourselves on some level because it was linked to the organization.
For us this is an opportunity to be authentically us - to talk about life, identity, marriage, family, business, art, and faith.
It’s also a place where we want to make space for questions, doubt and the tension of the messiness of life.
To steal a line from Brene Brown, we’re gonna ‘tell stories, keep it real, and keep it honest.’
So in keeping it honest... We meant to start this thing a few weeks ago but we had company, it was the kids’ spring break, our house is torn about with a kitchen remodel because of a hamster escape and Morgan’s been sick for the last week - we kept waiting for the ‘perfect time’ to do it...a time when I don’t sound nasally and sick, a time for the clouds to part and a golden ray of shimmery light to shine down for us to step into…
Which is exactly the meaning behind the name ‘Chasing Unicorns’ -
Why a Unicorn: In business a ‘unicorn’ is a privately held startup valued at over a $1billion - it’s a startup that went viral and made it (think Uber, AirBnB, Warby Parker, & Pinterest - Dollar Shave Club, Zulily, Stitch Fix, & Blue Apron were all Unicorns before they went public or were acquired). In life, a unicorn is a elusive, magical and fluffy horned creature. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin.
Really, Chasing Unicorns is about redirecting our chasing/pursuit in life, it’s about living in our own story and dispelling the myth that life begins when….(fill in the blank)
It’s so easy to get caught up in the chase for that elusive thing or status that you think will bring happiness and contentment and in the meantime we’re losing connection and joy in the present
Hope, Validity, Authenticity, Vulnerability, Celebration, Connection, Love, Empowerment, Permission, Space, Redemption, Beauty and Mystery.
So in taking some wisdom from Solomon, “Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.” - We’re launching Chasing Unicorns Podcasts! We’re taking a risk and stepping into something new together as a couple because we’re passionate and excited!
Holy Moments -
segment where we reflect, reminisce and remember the most ‘Holy’ moment of our last week.
DAVE - Jadyn hair issue. I ran up to her school and we sat down for 20 minutes and talked about identity. Her value, and beauty. And then there was this moment where she didn’t want to live her life letting other people tell her her value. And moments later there was a group of girls who ran up to her and told her she was beautiful and that she should come play with them at recess.
“Be Kind/Please Rewind”
As children from the 80s, this is a segment where we connect with our inner child and give ourselves permission to drop the Adult BS to talk about and try things that add beauty, joy, wonder back to life

“Today’s show has been brought to you by the word “Start” - it’s time...for the dream that’s stirring, that ‘what-if’ that you keep pushing down, and that opportunity that’s been knocking that requires a little risk and discomfort. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to ‘start’
“Until next week...keep embracing the mystery, asking questions, and giving yourself permission to enjoy the process. And watch out for those freakin’ unicorns...they’re glitzy and shimmery and full of crap!” ;)
